This was both a good and challenging read for me. I will be thinking about this book for a while. What I loved was the affirmation of all kinds of work and the affirmation of God wanting women to bring their unique gifts to bear in all areas of society.What I felt was lacking a bit (and I hope my own insecurities or hurts in this area aren't coloring this too much) was a bit more understanding of those of us who do take time off for a host of reasons to be "stay at home" moms. I don't think it was intentional, and I do feel she really tried to talk about motherhood and it's impact on our work lives, but the book ultimately made me feel, "it's OK to be a stay at home mom, but it's better if you do something else." I respect the historical argument she makes about women have always worked, and so love to see a push back against the strict separation between work and home, but the industrial revolution did happen, and as I grapple with thoughts of working while I have 3 kids, there is going to be much more separation from my kids than a woman in an agricultural society was looking at. It's a different choice we have to make, so I don't think being a housewife is simply a luxury which is a bit implied. Also, the book features tons of amazing and inspiring women, but it doesn't really address issues of childcare and the cost of that. As someone who worked low paying teaching jobs before kids, it just didn't make financial sense to pay for childcare after I became a mom. The book seems to come a bit from priveledge. The women featured all seem to have lots of education and choice and that's wonderful, and I love talking about the sacred in the secular, but it felt limited by talking about people that happen to have kick ass jobs or really visionary ministries.Now, obviously the church has probably skewed towards encouraging stay at home types over those following careers, and the book is kind of a course correction. It's understandable. It's great to start the conversation about a theology of work. I just felt for my situation it was slightly out of touch with some of my barriers and concerns. I do wish I had read it much earlier in life, I'm not sure I would have made different choices, but I certainly had no theological underpinnings for work outside of the church and that is truly a shame.

Beaty's A Woman's Place is essential reading for all women of faith. She does a superb job of providing context and history for women's current status in church, home and the workplace. Do we really need this? some may ask. Though as long as a decade ago the Mommy Wars were declared over, they're clearly not. Women with children who work often feel judged for working. Those who stay home with their children often feel disvalued by their working sisters. Beyond the Mommy Wars, many women are wrestling with their roles in church. This readable, engrossing, biblical treatment of the value of women and our work is the perfect means of exploring this essential topic. I hope many women's Bible studies and small groups snap this up----especially since the publisher is soon releasing a DVD study to go along with it.

Katelyn Beaty thoughtfully and comprehensively makes a strong Biblical case for why work is good and a God-given mandate for all as image bearers of God. She challenges what has become a cultural norm within 20th century Evangelical households. At the same time, she doesn't devalue the hard work of women who choose to stay at home. We are all called to work, and that looks different for different people.As a single, professional woman, I identified with Katelyn's analysis that fruitfulness happens in all stages of life. We are each accountable for what God has given us - regardless of gender or marital status. Flourishing can and should happen in all seasons of life. We are called to faithfulness by leaning in and pursuing restoration of creation, but we are also called to a "cross-shaped contentment" resting fully in God's plans.I would highly recommend this book to ALL Christian women and men, regardless of your current thoughts on women and work. In fact, I have purchased and given out multiple copies to friends because of all the wisdom I feel Katelyn imparts. This was a book that needed to be written, and Katelyn did so beautifully.

This is a very fruitful and inspiring book, especially as someone in the midst of articulating the "why" of my chosen career path. The writing style is informative and enjoyable to read. Just two small criticisms: there were just enough typos to be distracting, and I wish it had a couple more chapters on ways to cultivate working Christian women. I would love to read a follow-up.

I grew up in women led households and have watched strong women my entire life. I greatly enjoyed reading about the calling of mankind to work, to labor and the different ways that manifests itself. This book makes me want to go and ask the women who raised what they faced, how they felt and if they were supported. It also makes me want to thank them for setting an example of hard work, of following God's desires, for me and my siblings.

This book is so incredibly needed. Ms. Beaty addresses several cultural and theological issues about not only women's role in the workplace, but the human role in the workplace, and theological issues surrounding work. I recommend every Christian of both sexes read this as soon as possible.

In A Woman's Place, Beaty thoughtfully and thoroughly examines what it means for women to be called to work and contribute to the world as much as men. I appreciated her combination of research, anecdotes, and theological discourse. Her book has some of everything for everyone. It's disappointing that Christians still need to have this conversation about the appropriateness and worthiness of women's work, but I'm glad that A Woman's Place is here to contribute to that conversation.
