My 20 month old loves this story and the illustrations. I like to read it too, nice lesson that we each have our own talents no matter 'what' we are.

I remember my mother reading this to me every time we went to the orthodontist because he had it in his waiting room. It was one of those books that I demanded so frequently that my mother starting to beg me to let her read me any other book.I couldn't believe it when I was able to find this for my own 18 month old daughter, but there it was on amazon. I didn't think she would like it until she got a little older because it's definitely wordier than a lot of her other books but boy oh boy was I wrong. My daughter absolutely loves this book, and now we've started to read other story books to her as well. This is definitely her favorite but we've also had some good luck with "Annie and the Wild Animals", "Engine, Engine No. 9", and "The Best Nest".The book is all about Grandma Tildy who is willing to buy all sorts of pets who enrich her life and help her around the house. She repeats over and over to the pet man that she is willing to buy all sorts of animals "But No Elephants". At the end of the book she gets stuck with the Elephant anyway but even he proves to be useful.I think my daughter likes all of the animals which she can point to and recognize; she likes the household activities mentioned such as cooking stew and giving an animal a bath; finally I think she really likes some of the repetitive elements which help her predict what is to come.

I remembered this book from my grandmother’s house... had to purchase it for my own kids and I must say, they love it just as much as I did as a kid!I don’t know why Grandma Tildy is so open to so many different kinds of animals as pets yet so adamantly against an elephant, but the repeated, “but no elephants!” sure makes my kids giggle!A fun, silly classic..!

I was born in 1989 and this was my favorite book as a child! The illustrations are wonderful and the story captured my interest as a child. I give this book as a gift to every baby shower i’m invited to.If you like this book, i recommend looking into other books illustrated by jerry smath.

This was one of our son's favorite books almost 30 years ago and so, I continue to purchase it for baby gifts. Unfortunately this and another paperback were sent in an envelope with insufficient protection for the weight and the corners of both books are smashed. I now have two "new" books that look "used with no markings."I'm not happy. I have spent most of last night fingering the corners trying to figure out how to flatten them and the pages involved and whether or not I want to give this as a present. I may be overly critical of the damage but I would never purchase this copy as a "new" book if I were pulling it off the shelf. so sad.

Love this book! Read this to my children, who are now 27 and 30. My daughter always remembered the "elephant" book and made a comment she had looked in her library for it but didn't know the name, so had no luck. I searched on Amazon and found out its not in publication anymore! So I felt lucky getting this copy for her. She was so surprised and happy. Now she can read it to her children ♡

I bought this as a gift for a friend but I may need to get one for myself. This was my absolute favorite book as a kid and I still have my original copy, but it’s quite worn. The copy I received was in GREAT condition!

This was a favorite of my children and now my grandchildren enjoy it, too. The part about the elephant being excluded and crying is a little sad for very sensitive kids, but I think it teaches a valuable lesson when all turns out right in the end. Not everything is peachy keen in life, and kids realize that at a very young age. Books like this help them cope with problems they encounter growing up and does it in a light-hearted way with appealing characters.

These books are classic! Too bad they are so overpriced, but they ARE getting harder to find. All of my adult kids have great memories of me reading these books to them, and now they want the books for THEIR kids. Except now, I can't afford to buy 10 copies at this price. Get yours NOW before they are no longer in print!
