The book is definitely lacking in substance. It seems to be one of those cases when a writer throws a handful of words between two covers to make a quick product. There was not much thought put into this. Frankly, the author seems very bitter toward old ladies, probably because she is really terrified of being old herself. I see a very headstrong and insecure woman who is trying to bolster her ego, her beliefs, and her life choices by putting others down for theirs. This book is by no means representative of the senior woman population. All the older women I know live active lives in the community. They may be a little slow on technology, but I don't think any of us really have the time to keep up with it all anyway. Some of the issues addressed in the "list" include issues of morality and religion, which I do not think Mrs. McHugh is prepared to tackle. The tone of the book is defensive, narrow minded, and intolerant. It may be too late for a complete revision, but that is what this book needs. It has the feel of a first rough draft. It needs more structure, more lightheartedness, and at least be doubled in length. That being said, I was annoyed by all the nasty reviewers, so I bought the book to make my own assessment. Many things they mentioned may be true, but the attitudes of these "nasty reviewers" reveals their unpleasant personalities. They are no better than the author whom they deride.
Very disappointed in this book. Looked all thru the details for the size BEFORE purchasing. Found nothing, so believed it was probably thin but something like the size of children's paperback books such as The Beranstain Bears. Well, it's MUCH smaller, like 3 x 5 inches. Most definitely not worth the cost of the item, and definitely not something I would give to someone as a gift. This is being returned!!
This tiny book, copyright 2008, is ludicrously outdated. Its target audience may be be women aged 85 or older, but that's a bit late to look for advice on this subject. The most glaring example comes from the last illustration, a woman with arrows pointing to practice of her. The hair label reads: "LOLs have tightly curlew, scrunched-up hairdos left over from WWII." LOL, of course, today means laugh out loud, which you will do if take this seriously. I was born in 1941, which makes me 74. My hairdo in that early part of my life was French braids. The kind of hairdo described would have been worn by a woman in her 20s or older...which would make her in her 90 now. And not one to need advice on avoiding becoming. Little old lady. Very irritating, when it is, I suppose, meant to amuse. Others have handled this theme much better.
This is a fun book. Senior citizens can find themselves on every other page. I use the book as a birthday gift for my old lady friends. There is a companion book, "How Not to Become a Crotchety Old Man". Both are books that will make you smile and laugh out loud.
i did totally not realized that "book" is only a little minnie Thingy ... that measures ~ 3 1/2 x 4 inches.... NOT what i expected...
this makes fun of everyone. i didnt expect it to be dry but it makes the attack on old ladies. Amazingly enough most of the young people i know post pictures about their food. they also talk about grosser stuff than a colonoscopy at food time. i am thoroughly disgusted with this book.
The content of this book is amusing. I did not read the details, and never expected a book to be 3.6" x 3.7". It is rather hard to read w/o bending the front cover. I have never looked at the size of a book before when ordering, but you can be certain that I will do so going forward.
This is a very brief collection of mild, tired jokes about aging, along the lines of (paraphrase) 'Little old ladies like Ed Sullivan', or 'fart in public'. Not one smile in the whole "book".
