Another Estil County tale from Pepper Pace. This one takes place behind bars, as the main character Cilla is falsely imprisoned for vehicular homicide. After borrowing her sister’s car without permission so she could make it to her job interview on time, Celia hears a radio report about a tragic hit and run accident that killed a well known advocate for the homeless. The accident took place on a street near her home. What she never expected was that her very own sister was the culprit.Meanwhile, Evilene, aka Debbie her sister, reports the car stolen and purposely tells the police Cilla is responsible for the accident. Witnesses saw the car flee the scene, but couldn’t identify the driver because of the downpour.Because of her sister’s lies and selfishness, Cilla is convicted and sentenced to five years in prison. The entire time she maintains her innocence, but no one believes her.While in prison, Cilla meets Aaron the prison librarian. He loves books as much as Cilla does. They form a bond over words when she is assigned to work in the library with Aaron and his mother. They engage in a rather mild flirtation that leads to them having a jailhouse romance. Now, don’t get it twisted, Aaron is a by the rules kind of guy so there was no sex involved. The only thing they did was hold hands and hug in the back corner of the stacks. It was too cute.Cilla is under attack in the prison because of the crime she was convicted of committing. The black delegation decides to look out for her so the other races leave her alone. She bonds with her cell mate and a couple of other prisoners, but mostly stays to herself, lost in books.I won’t spoil the last part of the book, but I will day it ends with a HEA! This was a very different pace for the Estil County stories. While J am not a fan of reading about prisoners, I must admit this is a story that needs to be told. Too many innocent people are behind bars for crimes they didn’t commit and it would do society well to be more informed before jumping to conclusions.
I have change my rating after thinking about the story overnight. I usually love Ms. Pace book but this one left me with a lot of questions, I’m not sure if there is another part of the book that I am missing. But this one didn’t really do it for me. I needed more details on Debbie and cilla dysfunctional family drama. What can cause a sister to hate the other that much, to go that low to hurt them. Aaron and cilla relationship didn’t developed that much to me, they relationship was fast; didn’t really feel the connection. Yeah they both have love for books, so what. Shrugs the relationship didn’t develop much for that hea, my opinion. Maybe I’m missing something. Others might feel different than me but I needed more. Beast and Juicy will forever be my favorites.

Priscilla had to be careful to protect herself from CO's and the inmates, but she made friends. She even found her soul mate in Aaron the librarian. They had to overcome a lot of obstacles to find their happy ever after. Oh yes..another winner from Ms. Pace.An unforgivable lie that led to shame, horror and confinement. The saddest thing about this tale is that being incarcerated for a crime one didn't commit truly happens way more than most people know. And prison life was very well presented here. I worked as a CO in a state prison.I just love these Estill County Mountain Men! Aaron & Cilla are just the sweetest nerds in the world & perfect for each other. And I must admit how Libraries used to be a safe haven for me. I know exactly what they mean about that smell. Mmmmm.... I would stand in the foyer and just take the deepest breaths! Aaaaahhh...just heaven!😊Cillas' sister...well I don't know what to say there. Good God..what a stupid selfish cow! But I actually felt bad about her and Red Rooster Man....ugh...I'm nauseous just thinking about it.An impossible yet heartwarming love story I got so caught up in, I finished it in one sitting! Bravo!ðŸ‘
Pepper Pace did the doggone thing again!!This time she challenges us from the beginning about our sense of right and wrong and our preconceived notions about family and the justice system.Cilla's story took me through every emotion and reminded that we cannot rush to judgement thinking we know all the facts. It also reminded me that the justice system often fails the poor, minorities and the mentally ill.Aaron is the librarian at a woman's prison and sees Cilla after her arrival at the woman's prison where he works. There is an instant awareness and sense of connection between them.What happens next is a series of events and reactions that brings these two together, unveils the truth and shows justice being dispensed.You need this book in your library and it is worth every penny. Well done Ms. Pace!! Well done indeed.
