Review

“Rambachan’s groundbreaking book … marks an exciting moment for Hindu theology in the postcolonial era and will be a welcome conversational partner for the many global theologies that employ the methods of liberation theology.” ― Horizons“If you have only one book on the Advaita tradition or Hindu ethics in your library, this is the one to have. Aside from his scholarly honesty, Rambachan is an excellent writer of clear and concise prose and makes Hinduism accessible.” ― Journal of Hindu-Christian Studies“Rambachan has written an original, creative, and provocative book that will assure that Hinduism has a greater voice in the general arena of interreligious dialogue.” ― Paul F. Knitter, Union Theological Seminary“This is an important contribution to the advancement of constructive work in Hindu theology, comparative theology, and the study of South Asian religious traditions. It has the potential to revolutionize how scholars view Hinduism generally, and Advaita Vedānta in particular.” ― Jeffery D. Long, Elizabethtown College

I was so excited to find out about this book, and it was an amazing read. Rambachan's reasoning is both thorough and clear. This is the only work I know of which fills the gap in Hindu theologies of liberation. While not a criticism of the work (since the publisher rather than the author generally chooses the book title), the book would have been more appropriately entitled An Advaita Vedanta Theology of Liberation, as the arguments are based primarily on the Prasthanarayi and writings of Adi Shankara. This work is essential reading for any progressive Hindu or adherent of Advaita Vedanta.

An excellent and timely work that makes a strong case for a kind of "social justice Hinduism" based on an interpretation of Advaita Vedanta. The author wrestles with questions like: if the world is "unreal" according to the Advaita understanding, then in what sense should we engage with it? Is there a place within the Hindu tradition, as there is within a Christian tradition in which the world was created good, for social justice? Is Hinduism equipped to speak to modern ecological and economic problems? Again and again Dr. Rambachan demonstrates that the Advaita worldview has within it the seeds of a kind of liberation theology that can transform the world.

Frank, refreshing analysis of many social issues that should not be expalined away by religious dogma. Great insights into being a hindu

I had to get this book for a class and it was actually rather interesting. I probably won't read it again, but it is a very informative thought provoking book. I would definitely recommend it if the topic interests you.
