Rosemary Wells was a keynote speaker at a Children's Literature conference at Simmons College one summer. I will never forget her words that spoke of the importance of reading to children (especially now). She said, "... Nursery Rhymes/Mother Goose are the Shakespeare of Kindergarten." As a former children's library director I concur.

I love mother goose. They really are my favorite lines of verse for my daughter. I like the selection of verse in this book very much, but I'm not a fan of the illustrations. They are just a little too muddled and mostly feature a weird mouse-like creature. I also find this book to be a little big for just my daughter and I. If you have a bigger family, you might appreciate the size more. I wish I would have gone for the more classic illustrations. I have a Husky board book that I really love from my childhood. I'll keep my eye out for something like that again.

I had this book for 6 months now. My kid then 9 months old did not enjoy it as much. However he was still interested in listening to the book. However as he grew around 11 months he started loving this book and at 12 he would bring this book to me to read it to him and as he is growing further he is loving more and more poems and remembering them now.Moral of the story is kids love this book and grow with this book. It should be a staple in any kids library.Only cons are that pages are plain paper, so if you are not careful kids will tear them. Also, it does not include some of the popular poems like itsy bitsy etc...But still the collection of rhymes is great and my kid enjoys the poems there are..

I bought this for my granddaughter when she was nine months old after reading the good reviews on Amazon. This is the best book I have bought her so far. She loves the illustrations, as do I. The colors are vivid, the illustrations sweet, and the nursery rhymes are the old popular rhymes. I like that the rhymes are the happy nursery rhymes, nothing morbid. My granddaughter is 10 months old now, and she loves it when I pull out the book to read with her. The last time, she tried to kiss some of the cute critters in the illustrations! The quality of the materials used to make this book is also impressive: The pages have a slight sheen and are of durable thickness (not heavy like cardboard, but not so thin they will tear easily when turned or crinkle when young hands touch the pictures), and the binding is solid. I highly recommend you add this book to a child's library.

Compared to "Richard Scarry's Best Mother Goose Ever" I was a bit disappointed in this book. I know the author was careful to choose only the non-violent, non-mean, non-sexist rhymes, but there were simply not enough of them. The illustrations are very nice, very much what little tots like.

What a lovely book this is. Rosemary Wells's illustrations are fantastic...the facial expressions on the little characters are delightful.Every rhyme I remember is included in the book along with so many that are new to me.My only other comment is that the book is big and heavy, so I should have paid attention to that when I ordered. But the little guy who will get this book won't be deterred, he loves to "read" by himself or with his mom or dad.

My go-to baby gift. Every child should have a great Mother Goose collection--from birth.

I was drawn to this book immediately because I grew up reading Rosemary Wells books and I love nursery rhymes. I never imagined that my 18 month old daughter would become obsessed with it! She asks for the "goose book" every day. I can't believe how it holds her attention, when she is normally a very active toddler and has a hard time sitting for most books. She will let me read the whole book to her each day! The drawings are charming and humorous to adults, and they depict many things that toddlers love (hens, moons, sheep, cows, etc), so she points out everything. But the best part is that she is the language that she is learning. She will now say the last word of many lines when I pause at the end of them. I was shocked. The pictures are large, bright and funny, but the words are also very compelling to my little girl. It is hands down the best baby book I have purchased so far and will be a gift that I give to many others.
